The man who recently vanished from holding cells at the Harare Magistrates’ Courts, has been rearrested and brought back to court on extra charges of unlawful escape from custody.
Marvin Roy Chinganga (26) pleaded guilty and was convicted. He now just awaits sentence. Chinganga escaped from the custody of Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services on August 20 after appearing on a charge of theft and two counts of domestic violence, all involving his mother’s property.
Domestic violence charges arose after he allegedly assaulted his mother.
At his subsequent trial, Chinganga said he ran off since he feared a jail sentence. Chinganga, who was issued with an arrest warrant last Monday, was then re-arrested after returning to his mother’s home.
The original batch of three charges arose from his confrontation with his mother since 2019, the State led by Mrs Shambadzeni Fungura said.
In that year, Chinganga allegedly stole 20 litres of diesel from his mother and vanished. He however, eventually returned to live with his mother.
Because of his behaviour, his mother decided to keep her son away from her sewing machines, which she locked away in a spare bedroom. Chinganga then broke down the door to the spare bedroom and when his mother confronted him he threatened to kill her if she continued locking doors.
Mercy Jonasi then went to lodge a complaint with the police, who started investigating one charge of theft and one charge of domestic violence.
The second domestic violence charge arose when Chinganga heard that his mother had reported him to the police, and threatened her with unspecified action.
