MUTARE City Council has condemned the deplorable state of the Courtauld Theatre, and is undertaking extensive renovations to restore the facility’s former glory as a premier arts and entertainment venue.
The theatre has been closed for renovations following the recent eviction of some tenants.
At a press conference today, Mutare City Council Town Clerk, Mr Blessing Chafesuka said substantial amount of money will be allocated toward revamping the building.
Mr Chafesuka said the council had faced litigation in the past after artistes were injured during performances due to the facility’s poor condition.
“It is deeply regrettable that the Courtauld Theatre has been allowed to fall into a deplorable state, while a selected few individuals have been profiting from renting out this public asset. From now on, council will assume full management of the facility. Anyone wishing to utilise the facility, particularly after the renovations, will be required to liaise directly with the council, eliminating any third-party involvement.
“The facility will be closed for renovations, with a substantial allocation of funds dedicated to this endeavour. Although we cannot provide a definitive timeline for the renovations at present, work is already underway, with an architect on site assessing the necessary renovation works.
“The stage in the theatre room had become hazardous for performers. We have faced litigation in the past when an artiste sustained injuries after falling from the stage into the underground rooms, highlighting the alarming state of disrepair. Furthermore, it has come to our attention that unauthorised food outlets, saloons, and other businesses unrelated to arts and entertainment had begun operating within the Courtauld Theatre. We have successfully put an end to these activities,” he said.
