THERE was blood on the beer-soaked floor at a Cowdray Park Sports Bar on Saturday night after a boozed-up brawl spiralled into a near-fatal stabbing frenzy.
Two men, aged 33 and 28, ended up in hospital after they were attacked while trying to stop a fight involving a gang of unruly patrons.
According to police, the drama played out just before midnight on 31 May. Violence broke out between a group of men during a night of heavy drinking.
“The complainants were drinking at a Sports Bar in Cowdray Park when they attempted to restrain a group that was fighting with unknown patrons,” said Bulawayo police spokesperson Inspector Nomalanga Msebele.
Instead of cooling tempers, the would-be peacemakers became targets.
“One of the accused stabbed the first complainant twice in the back and twice on the shoulders. He sustained deep cuts. The second complainant was struck with a chair and suffered a swollen forehead,” Inspector Msebele said.
The accused have been named as Brian Ncube (19) of Cowdray Park and Tawanda Mupereki (28), who has no fixed address. Their partners-in-chaos, identified only as Simbarashe Chikowere, Fate and Mgcini Xaba, also allegedly took part in the attack.
Police, acting on a tip-off, rushed to the scene and managed to arrest the suspects before more blood was spilled.
The injured victims were taken to Mpilo Central Hospital for treatment.
Authorities have since issued a stern warning to the public.
“We are urging people not to carry dangerous weapons in public and to resolve disputes peacefully, especially when under the influence of alcohol,” said Insp Msebele.
