A THREE-year-old girl from Cowdray Park in Bulawayo tragically drowned after slipping into a water-filled toilet pit while playing with a friend on Thursday evening.
Police confirmed the sudden death of the juvenile, identified as Keila Nkomo, saying the incident occurred on November 28, 2025, at around 6PM.
According to Bulawayo provincial police spokesperson Inspector Nomalanga Msebele, Keila was playing near an outdoor toilet at a nearby house with her nine-year-old friend when she accidentally slipped and fell into a pit approximately 2.5 metres deep and half-filled with water.
Realising what had happened, the other child rushed to Keila’s home to alert her aunt, a 22-year-old woman who was looking after her.
She is reported to have rushed to the scene, retrieved the toddler from the pit and attempted to administer first aid, but it was already too late.
The child’s body was later taken to United Bulawayo Hospitals (UBH) mortuary for a post-mortem.
Inspector Msebele described the incident as deeply distressing and urged communities to remain vigilant, especially during the rainy season when water-related hazards increase.
“We urge parents and guardians to always monitor children under their care and warn them not to play near water bodies and deep pits to avoid loss of life,” said Inspector Msebele.
“We also warn members of the public not to cross flooded streams and rivers but to wait for them to subside, especially during the rainy season,” she said.
