The Civil Protection Unit (CPU) remains on high alert in Masvingo Province, where the country’s two largest inland dams are overspilling.
Tugwi-Mukosi Dam, the largest inland dam in Zimbabwe, started spilling two weeks ago following incessant rains in the catchment area.
A similar scenario at Masvingo’s Lake Mutirikwi, the country’s second-largest inland dam, preceded Tugwi-Mukosi Dam’s spillage.
Permanent Secretary for Masvingo Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Dr Addmore Pazvakavambwa said the provincial CPU remains on high alert in case of flooding downstream.
“The two biggest inland dams in Zimbabwe are both in Masvingo Province. Tugwi-Mukosi and Mutirikwi Dams are both spilling, so we had to activate our provincial CPU to be on alert in case of floods in downstream areas,” he said.
Dr Pazvakavambwa said the situation will continue to be closely monitored, although the recent decrease in rains received might see the spillage receding.
The rains received are a boon for irrigation, especially in the Lowveld, where water is guaranteed for the next few years.
