Blessed Chitamba, St Ignatius College
Success is for those who are willing to create. Look at the most successful people in the world right now. The most successful and richest people in the world are not the best professionals, best engineers, best students in class etc. The most successful people are the best CREATORS. These are creators of the best companies, movies, global brands, technologies, clothing products etc. These are people who have mastered the art of creation and have made use of the creative capabilities of their minds to birth forth products that we all use, solutions to common problems, and have made life easier for mankind because of what they have created.
Your dream in life as a young student should not be to just become a professional in a certain field. It should not be limited to just becoming an engineer or accountant or lawyer. Your dream in life should be to CREATE! It should be to use that knowledge you will have gained in school to create more knowledge and to add to what people can benefit from in this world.
Never think that the people who have created all the things we enjoy and benefit from today had any special mental abilities that you don’t possess. Never think they are people who are smarter than you. Everyone has a mind that’s equally powerful, but what differentiates creators from the rest of the people is that they decide to put their minds to work. You and your mind are like a painter and a brush; all painters in this world use the same paint and brush on the same canvas, but what differentiates great painters from the rest is that great painters put more dedication and skill into their painting, using the same resources that everyone uses. It’s the same with the mind; there is no limit to what you can create with your mind. It just takes your willingness to put it to work.
Our continent Africa has one problem that needs to be solved in order to speed our progress. We lack the necessary creators. We don’t have enough of them. Very few are willing to take the risk to become creators of the jobs they want. Africa needs more prosperity creators, job creators, product creators. Right now Africa is a major beneficiary of Western creations. When are they going to become beneficiaries of our creations as well?
So the reason why I am telling this to you and not anyone else is that you are part of the select few in this continent who have been privileged to have such high quality education. Therefore I call upon you to brace the challenge and become the ones who will create the necessary paraphernalia to move this continent forward. Any society will only move forward through creation, hence let us become the creators.
You must also understand the purpose of learning. The mind was not meant to learn to regurgitate, it was meant to learn and create. Innovation comes through information. The more you open your mind with information, the more you are able to see gaps and opportunities to create.
Lastly, whatever special interest you have, give it a bit more attention and open your mind more in that field. Some of you are interested in cooking for example. Don’t let that end in your mom’s kitchen only. Give that skill more attention. I’m not saying let it replace your academics.
But I’m saying give it a bit more attention, while giving your books the most attention. Study more into that area. Begin to read world class recipes and master them. Some of you love movies so much. Begin to invest some time and effort in developing that. Study how movies are made. Broaden your mind in that area, because as you do so, you begin to see gaps and ideas. Your creativity in that area begins to expand beyond the ordinary. Same goes for those who love computers, games, fashion, cars etc. Invest into those areas, because who knows, you might become the next person to be supplying menus for Emirates airlines. So remember, the world rewards CREATORS, so THINK CREATION!
