THE creative sector has taken a bold step towards realising Vision 2030 by unlocking opportunities that create jobs for many talented youths while promoting the country’s cultural values and tourism.

United States-based film-maker Nkosilathi Khumalo, award-winning Hollywood producer Terry Benedict, South African-born producer Vlokkie Gordon, and line producer Lesley-Anne Mulder are part of this mission.

On Tuesday the crew met the Minister of State for Bulawayo Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Judith Ncube, Provincial Secretary, Mr Paul Nyoni, and Deputy Minister of Local Government and Public Works, Albert Mavunga and outlined their pitch and desire for more collaboration.

The quartet is exploring opportunities for film projects in Zimbabwe, with a focus on promoting tourist attractions in the country through the filming of “Amazulu”, a sports tourism-fuelled film.

Minister Ncube endorsed the project.

“This is a special moment for the city as it dovetails with the country’s Vision 2030. This film portends the power to create jobs, and speaks to our film tourism thrust,” she said.

“As the city is known for its artistic and cultural excellence, I implore each and every one of us to embrace this project and safeguard it jealously.

“Let’s have that sense of ownership. As I endorse it, I acknowledge the presence of top-tier film producers who not only shaped childhoods but also entertained and educated masses through the powerful film avenue.”

Minister Ncube said the title of the movie itself resonates well and encapsulates the idea of Ubuntu, love and unity.

“We are a historical and royal city, descendants of Mzilikazi from the Zulu line. We are happy to be custodians of this project,” she said.

The stakeholders meeting follows those done in different parts of the country, with the latest one held in Harare over the weekend.

These are spearheaded by Nhimbe Trust, a Pan-African creative civil society and advocacy organisation.

Also among those present at the meetings were actress Mbonisi “Mbo Mahocs” Mahonondo, producer, director, writer, and arts entrepreneur, Saimon Mambazo Phiri, musician, Mzoe7, National Arts Council of Zimbabwe (NACZ) Bulawayo Provincial Arts Manager, Cleopatra Dube, among others.
