Creatives put cultural identity at heart of Independence celebrations

The Vintage Culture Association is preparing to turn Bulawayo’s grid-lined streets into a moving gallery through its inaugural “Vintage Walk of Freedom” in celebration of Independence Day on Saturday.

The initiative uses fashion as a storytelling tool, bringing history into contemporary public expression. For the association’s founder, known as Father K, vintage attire is more than style, it is a statement of identity and remembrance.
“The Vintage Walk to Freedom is our unique way of celebrating Zimbabwe’s Independence. We’re embracing vintage style to tell a story of freedom, heritage, and pride. The aim is to inspire young people to value and celebrate our nation’s history in a fun, creative way,” Father K said.

By blending traditional heritage with modern design, the initiative seeks to reinterpret the national narrative, turning “sartorial flair” into a medium of cultural continuity.

For artistes such as Bulawayo-based reggae performer Mandie Mae, the stage represents more than performance; it is a space of identity and reflection.
“Independence Day helps us remember who we are and revisit our sense of culture and belonging as artistes. It also gives awareness to the world that Zimbabwe is a country in Africa and gives us recognition as an African country,” Mandie Mae said.

While fashion takes to the streets of Bulawayo, the musical heartbeat of the celebrations will be at Minda High School, Matobo, where the Independence Gala will run from the evening of April 17 into the early hours of Independence Day. – Follow on X @MbuleloMpofu
