MARONDERA-based Hokima Cricket Academy are set to host a golf day next month to raise funds.

The initiative is part of their efforts to spruce up the academy and have modern equipment to ensure that children will be nurtured in the right way.

Hokima Cricket Academy vice-chairperson Willard Stenala said the golf day will bring the community together as it fund raises for the future of cricket stars.

“As Hokima Cricket Academy we will be hosting a golf day, which seeks to bring the community together and foster a sense of belonging between the locals and the academy

“We want to use the golf day to have people from different backgrounds to come and network with the main objective being to share ideas on we can grow and have everyone participate in the growth of the academy.

“The primary aim is to raise funds for equipment and sprucing up of existing facilities, which will ensure that the academy will provide the best training environment for the kids,” said Stenala.

The academy’s vice-chairperson revealed that among their priorities was buying equipment and drilling of boreholes and water tanks.

“We are appealing to the business community to be part of the golf day as we seek to purchase more sports equipment, drilling of boreholes and setting up water tanks.

“Proceeds from the golf day will go towards the improvement of the academy,” said Stenala.

Hokima Cricket academy was founded by Northampton-based cricket club, Great Houghton player and juniors coach, Kudzai Mutiti, in 2020.

Mutiti, who grew up selling airtime, set-up the academy as part of giving back to the community and helping disadvantaged children to realise their dreams through sport.

Four years after it was set-up, Stenala believes the academy has been influential in impacting life skills to children and has urged the community to be involved in its development.

“Since the formation of the academy back in 2020, we have had youth engagement.

“It has provided a constructive outlet for young kids by keeping them engaged in positive activities, in the process playing a key role in the fight against drugs and also impacting the young kids with life skills,.

Stenala also believes that the qualification of Marondera-based club Strikers, to play in the National Premier League for the 2024-25 season will inspire all the young players at the academy.

“Having a team from Marondera playing in the national is a welcome development for us as an academy and the community at large.

“I believe this will inspire the young kids to dream big,” said Stenala.
