A MAN from Makokoba suburb in Bulawayo was assaulted for fondling the buttocks of a female imbiber in a police holding area after they were arrested at a shebeen.

Moses Hungwe and Diana Mashoko (25) were part of a group of imbibers who were arrested after they were caught taking wise waters at the illegal drinking hole.

According to a source who declined to be named Hungwe was visibly drunk when the police pounced on them in the wee hours of Sunday night last week.

“He was heavily drunk and when we were put in a holding area at Mzilikazi police station he moved closer to Diana and caressed her buttocks while everyone was watching. Some scolded him for his unbecoming actions. Diana hit him. Soon after that others joined and rained slaps on Hungwe while some kicked him,” said the source.

Hungwe, the source said, was left shirtless and bleeding from the head and mouth.

The source revealed that Hungwe cried and caught the attention of police officers.

“Three police officers rushed to the scene and found him lying unconscious with no visible injuries. Police established that he was beaten up. They called an ambulance which ferried him to Mpilo central hospital,” said the source.

Bulawayo deputy police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Nomalanga Msebele said: “We are investigating a case where a man who was in a drunken stupor fondled a woman’s buttocks.

“We discourage members of the public from drinking at such places because they won’t be able to practise social distancing and such drinking spots could be a breeding ground for the deadly coronavirus. Moreover they are illegal and havens for crime.”
