Crime rate up in capital

Police have expressed concern over an increase in the use of guns in the robbery cases in and around the city.

National police spokesperson Chief Superintendent Paul Nyathi said in one of the incidents, a 34-year-old man lost R220 000 to four armed robbers in the city while attempting to change the money into United States dollars.

The man is alleged to have approached one of the robbers in the city who lured him to get into their get-away car. The incident occurred at around 1.30pm.

“When he got into the vehicle, there were three other occupants and the man became suspicious before attempting to disembark but was blocked by the robbers,” Chief Supt Nyathi said.

One of the robbers produced a knife and stabbed the man’s right palm five times while the other robber produced a pistol. They snatched a small bag containing the money before pushing the man out of their get-away vehicle. In another incident, five Chinese lost US$2 000 to two armed robbers who raided their Mt Pleasant house.
