The MDC-T dominated council sparked controversy when it short-listed Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai, his deputy Thokozani Khupe and Water Resources Management and Development Minister Dr Samuel Sipepa Nkomo, for the prestigious award.
Angry residents rallied against the decision saying the MDC-T leaders had not done anything for the city to deserve the award. In separate interviews yesterday, councillors said the issue would be thrashed out at the full council meeting as it was urgent.
“This matter has caused a lot of discord among councillors and the MDC-T. Councillors are afraid that a backlash from residents over the issue could result in them being voted out of office in the forthcoming elections. We have decided to put the matter to rest tomorrow, rather than letting negative debate continue,” said a councillor.
