A 33-YEAR-OLD woman, who lost a leg after a crocodile attack in 2015, received crutches in Mbare on Saturday.
Nyarai Muchayabhandi was among 12 people living with disabilities who received wheelchairs and crutches, sourced by Yvonne Chikasha, a Zimbabwean woman based in Canada.
Yvonne’s brother, Donald Chikasha, handed over the crutches and wheelchairs to the recipients at their family home along Zambe Street, in Mbare.
Nyarai told H-Metro her life changed following the attack.
“I want to thank Yvonne for this gift,” said Nyarai. My life changed following the attack since I was not able to work for myself or run around to make ends meet.
“I was also blessed with triplets in May this year.
“With these crutches I will now be able to help my husband to provide for our seven children.
“Iyezvino tirikurarama nekuchengeta pamba peumwe munhu kuUshewokunze asi tikawana rubatsiro tinokwanisa kushanda,” said Nyarai.
A 17-year-old Lower Sixth Mbare pupil also received crutches. Chioniso Shoriwa, who is based at Jairos Jiri Children’s Home in Waterfalls, received a wheelchair.
Yvonne hailed Zimbabweans for their spirit of giving, saying some of the crutches and wheelchairs, were donated by local people.
“I am a victim of child abuse and my upbringing opened up my eyes during a prayer and I saw the need to be my brother’s keeper,” said Yvonne.
“I want to thank Zimbabweans for joining hands with me in helping the needy. Some of the crutches and wheelchairs have been donated by our own people since I sometimes find it difficult to transport many from this place.
“There are a number of wheelchairs and crutches, but my challenge is shipping them to Zimbabwe,” she said.
More than 200 people, living with disabilities, have so far benefited from Yvonne and her friends’ charitable work.
