A FORMER Chitungwiza Town Council employee is in trouble after a failed attempt to change ownership of a residential stand.
Berinadate Square, (39) appeared before Harare magistrate, Yeukai Dzuda, charged with fraud.
Square was granted bail and will be back in court on Friday.
Allegations are that in June, the complainant, Gladys Mudavanhu, approached the Municipal Council wanting to change ownership of a residential stand from her to her daughter, who is based in the United Kingdom.
Square and another accomplice, who is still at large, intercepted Mudavanhu and claimed they could help her.
The two informed Mudavanhu that, at least US$700, was required for her to skip the Council’s cumbersome process.
Mudavanhu paid Square the money and she handed it to her accomplice, who manipulated the council’s IT system, to generate a bill statement that she gave to Mudavanhu.
Mudavanhu left thinking the change of ownership had been effected.
However, after being tipped off that she had been scammed, Mudavanhu approached relevant council authorities and found out that she had been hoodwinked by Square and her accomplice.
Investigations were conducted leading to the arrest of Square.
During the court proceedings, Square was warned not to interfere with State witnesses, until the matter is finalised.
Anesu Chirenje appeared for the State.
