A GRADE Seven learner at Gumira Primary School in Chipinge was recently killed by a crocodile at Save-Dakate rivers confluence.
Chipinge Rural District Council Ward 22 councillor, Cllr Evely Mhuru, confirmed the incident which happened at Machiya Village under Chief Musikavanhu’s area.
“I can confirm the incident which happened on January 20 when Moses Musikiri was attacked and killed by a crocodile while herding cattle with his two friends.
“Some of the cattle strayed and crossed Dakate River to graze along Save River.
“Moses removed his clothes and swam across Dakate River to drive the cattle back. After driving the cattle back, Moses tried to swim to the place where he had left his clothes when he was attacked by a crocodile,” said Cllr Mhuru.
Cllr Mhuru said one of Moses’ friends took a log and tried to rescue him, but was attacked by another crocodile.
“The boy cried for help and villagers swiftly reacted and rescued him. They failed to rescue Moses and a search was carried out. The villagers managed to recover Moses’ remains 500 metres from where he was attacked. The crocodile had devoured Moses’ left arm,” said Cllr Mhuru. Zimparks rangers were notified of the incident. They managed to trek and kill the crocodile.
