Crugger: Hip-hop star in the making

Lil Wayne, Ludacris, Wiz Khalifa and others who are all African-American as well as successful hip-hop artistes. Despite those claims Nyasha “Crugger” Gurure is a hip-hop star in the making.

With a quiet disposition, the dreadlocked star is an “Old Hararian”. He is a former student of Prince Edward Boys High, where he finished his Advanced Level studies last year and is waiting for the results.

Nyasha a.k.a. Crugger was born on January 11, 1994 in a family of three boys, in which he is the second.

Nyasha started singing at 11 when he was still in Grade Six and that was when he released his first song entitled “Honourable”. Crugger has continued to grow from strength to strength in the music industry.

He is poised to release his debut album in July this year. The debut album will be one of the numerous projects this year as he released a single on January 18.

Crugger is also shooting a video for his successful track called “I Want Her” featuring Queen Vanessa. Tracks to look out for on this debut album are, “Zvangu Zvirikufaya”, “I Want Her”, “I Like It” and “African Soldier”.

Asked about the challenges faced in the journey to become a fully fledged hip-hop star he said: “Breaking into any industry is always difficult.

“There are so many forces at play and music is no exception. For instance, trying to raise money for recording as well as for shooting videos, also publicity is a factor as you want people to know who you are so as to appreciate you.”

However, he is glad to have a chance to showcase his talents at a number of events around the country. Crugger performed in a dance competition called “Breakdown”.
He also performed at Miss Harare Junior held at Pandhari Lodge which he says is the pinnacle of his career so far.

“My performance at Miss Harare Junior still lingers in my memory. I think it is the pinnacle of my career so far and in all the shows that I will perform in future I will always draw strength from that performance.”

At the Kadoma Musical Awards he also made a performance that must have left his audience entranced.

Crugger, however, wants to extend his appreciation to his mother who has been his sole financial sponsor.

Away from music Crugger also boasts a number of accolades from boxing. Crugger is part of the Zimbabwe Under-19 boxing team.

He participated in the National Youth Games in both 2011 and 2012 editions where he won gold and bronze medals respectively.

Contrary to popular belief that music and school work do not go hand in hand, Crugger seems to be combining the two quite well. It seems to be a clash of talent and brains!

As an A-Level student last year he is looking forward to going to university this year with his sights set on a career in accounts.

“I want to pursue a career in accounts. It has always been my dream to be a chartered accountant.”
Crugger is inspired by Lil Wayne, Ricky Ross as well as Nigerian Ice  Prince.

He is dressed by a local clothing label called k7.
