It was glitz and glamour at the recent Youth Cultural Arts Festival at Charles Austin Theatre in Masvingo with 13 schools from all parts of Zimbabwe competing in the cultural extravaganza.
Some of the local schools at YOCAF included Thornhill High, Serima High, Pamushana, Churchhill Boys, Gifford High, Victoria High and Eveline Girls High.
All were just competing to showcase their talents on acting. Others benefited from the mentorship on how to act from Bob Mutumbi, in addition to a general youths meeting discussing on issues affecting children.
The gathering ran under the theme “I will act now”.
The Mutendi Band harmoniously led everyone in singing the national anthem.
There was entertainment provided by Trevor Dongo and Baba Shupi and Mokoomba, a Victoria Falls- based afro fusion band which left the crowd gasping for more.
Michael, Tatenda and Clive Chigubu were the outstanding comedians.
Out of the 13 schools, Thornhill High won the YOCAF competitions. Thornhill High students acted a drama called “Virtues and Consequences” focusing on child marriages affecting school children.
Rejoice Farai Tinarwo an Upper Six student at Thornhill High was the main actor in their drama. She left the audiences in awe as she portrayed a child in an arranged early marriage situation.
She easily walked away with the YOCAF Director’s Award for her outstanding performance.
Rejoice and her fellow students were rewarded with a tour of the major resorts in Masvingo such as the Great Zimbabwe Monuments and Lake Mutirikwi in addition to prize money.
“We are light to the world . . . all things are possible if we work hard,” Rejoice said.
