Culture and power: Politburo holds indaba at Heritage Village

HERITAGE Village, Zimbabwe’s fast-rising cultural and heritage centre in Liberation City, Harare, today hosts a major national event when President Mnangagwa officially opens the ZANU PF Strategic Seminar for Politburo members.

The choice of venue is laden with symbolism. As the home of culture and tradition, Heritage Village provides a fitting setting for the ruling party, whose identity is deeply intertwined with the protection of Zimbabwe’s liberation legacy, national memory and sovereignty.

The event also underscores the growing stature of Heritage Village as a venue capable of hosting high-level gatherings of strategic importance.

ZANU PF has historically been identified as the custodian of the values and ideals of the liberation struggle. Hosting the party’s strategic seminar at Heritage Village brings together political leadership and cultural consciousness, reinforcing the message that national development must remain anchored in history, identity and shared values.

The seminar will also highlight the confidence that national institutions continue to place in Heritage Village as a credible, secure and dignified events destination.

The venue has steadily evolved into a preferred location for major conferences, cultural festivals and policy-oriented engagements, contributing to Zimbabwe’s expanding Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions (MICE) tourism offering.

Heritage Village forms a key component of the broader Liberation City Project, which has enjoyed consistent support from President Mnangagwa and his Government.

Conceived and being implemented by the Institute of African Knowledge (INSTAK), Liberation City is envisioned as a flagship cultural, educational and economic development zone that celebrates African identity.

Government backing has been instrumental in positioning the project as a national asset aligned with Zimbabwe’s cultural diplomacy, tourism growth and heritage preservation objectives. The hosting of the ZANU PF Strategic Seminar at Heritage Village further cements its role within the national development narrative.

Adding to the site’s national significance is the involvement of the First Lady, Dr Auxillia Mnangagwa, who is the Patron of Heritage Village and a Politburo member.

A passionate advocate for African culture, healthy living and heritage-based empowerment, the First Lady has consistently used the venue to advance her initiatives, including the promotion of gastronomic tourism and the Gota/Nhanga/Ixhiba programme for boys and girls.

Through these programmes, Heritage Village has become a practical platform for intergenerational learning, moral guidance and cultural transmission. Traditional huts and communal spaces have been repurposed as living classrooms where young people are taught values, identity and respect for heritage in an authentic setting.

Beyond its cultural mission, Heritage Village has also demonstrated its capacity to host large-scale public events. Cultural festivals, exhibitions and celebrations held at the venue have drawn massive crowds, confirming its ability to accommodate tens of thousands of people while maintaining order, authenticity and a uniquely African atmosphere.

As President Mnangagwa opens the ZANU PF Strategic Seminar at Heritage Village, the occasion will mark more than a political gathering.

It will stand as a powerful statement about the centrality of culture and heritage in Zimbabwe’s past, present and future — and about the emergence of Heritage Village as a national space where history, leadership and progress converge.
