A ROW over change, turned tragic for a Chinhoyi man, who was violently attacked by the shop owner with a stone and stabbed with his own knife.
The accused is Moreblessing Sekerani (28) while the deceased is Jimmy Makiwa (28) of Witch wood farm, Chinhoyi
Sekerani appeared before Chinhoyi magistrate, Nyasha Marufu, who remanded him in custody at his hospital bed at Chinhoyi Provincial Hospital.
Circumstances are that on April 15, 2025, Makiwa went to Sekerani’s shop and purchased groceries and beer using a $10 note and went away.
The court heard at about 5pm, Makiwa returned asking for his change and was told that his change was $0.50c.
This did not go well with Makiwa, and a misunderstanding arose between the two over the amount of change.
In a fit of rage, Makiwa started vandalizing a speaker and a chair in the shop, prompting Sekerani to close business.
After he had closed his shop, and on his way home, Makiwa followed suit and started throwing stones at Sekerani.
Sensing danger, Sekerani, changed route and decided to go to his nephew’s place at Plot 2 Witchwood farm, where he briefed Chinyani about what had happened at the shop.
Chinyani acting as a good Samaritan escorted Sekerani to his residence where they found the bedroom door vandalized.
The two started repairing the door together.
The court heard that whilst repairing the door, the victim appeared from nowhere wearing a short only.
Makiwa arrived at the door where Sekerani was standing and hit him with a stone on the head.
The court heard that Makiwa opened his okapi knife, which he was holding in an attempt to stab Sekerani, who fought back until he took the knife.
In retaliation, Sekerani then stabbed Makiwa twice on the chest.
Makiwa fell down.
Sekerani then left his homestead and went to Glenamel farm, where he handed himself to Cephas Chiombera, and narrated what had transpired.
They went back to the house together and found the lifeless body of Makiwa lying on the ground.
The court heard a report was made at ZRP Chinhoyi Rural and together with CID Chinhoyi attended the scene.
Sekerani handed himself to the police.
At the crime scene the police found out that the bedroom door and window was broken and there were blood stains on the floor in the bedroom.
The body of Makiwa was lying facing upwards in a pool of blood with a deep cut on the centre of the chest and on the left side of the chest.
Sekerani also suffered a deep cut on the head, the right forefinger and middle finger were cut during the tussle.
A postmortem is yet to be conducted while investigations are still in progress.
