FOUL play is suspected in the death of an Inyathi man who allegedly committed suicide by drinking cyanide at his in-laws’ home following a dispute over his wife’s infidelity.
Mbuso Moyo, 30, who was buried last Monday, allegedly poisoned himself after failing to stomach rumours that his wife, Sikhangele Mholi had been having numerous affairs with gold panners in the area.
A Chronicle news crew visited Moyo’s family on Friday and they alleged that he was murdered, refuting claims by his in-laws that he poisoned himself.
Moyo’s sister and family spokesperson Otilia told The Chronicle they suspected foul play as the in-laws tried to conceal her brother’s death.“Sikhangele and Mbuso were living together at their homestead then she abandoned him to live with her brother and his wife. Before leaving she burnt most of their property and took their child with her,” said Moyo.
She added that her brother went to visit his estranged wife and son but was instead killed.“They didn’t tell us that he had died and instead reported the matter to the police. Why did they go all the way to the police yet our home is less than five kilometers away from theirs?” asked Moyo. However, Aggripa Gumpo, Mbuso’s brother-in-law said the deceased was an irresponsible father and husband. He added that his sister left her matrimonial home because of Mbuso’s goblins that were terrorising her.
“The fact of the matter is that Mbuso had a long standing dispute with his family as he’d inherited his grandfather’s goblins. He was a parasite who’d been living off us for the past 10 years. Now his family is spreading rumours that we murdered him yet he couldn’t even pay lobola,” said Gumpo.
He told Chronicle that Moyo had in the past threatened to commit suicide at their home and it had finally come to pass.
Bubi ward 22 councillor Francis Khumalo confirmed receiving reports of the warring families.
He expressed disappointment that the Gumpo family snubbed their son in-law’s funeral as a result of the feud.
“I heard that Moyo killed himself after drinking cyanide but I wasn’t told why. The police told us that they’re still investigating and awaiting post mortem results expected on Monday next week,” said Khumalo.
