A Sakubva man allegedly high on drugs, viciously stabbed his two children 11 times with a knife and later turned the weapon on himself, over an infidelity misunderstanding with his wife.

The children aged 14 and five years sustained serious injuries from the ruthless attack that left them in pools of blood.

Police quickly attended the scene and ferried them to Mutare Provincial Hospital where they were admitted in the Intensive Care Unit.

The incident happened on Sunday at Number 246A, OTS at around 8pm.

Manicaland provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Tavhiringwa Kakohwa, confirmed the incident, saying Weston Mudzimurema (38) had a misunderstanding with his wife, Vhena Munyara Matimbira (36), accusing her of having an extramarital affair.

“On the day in question, Matimbira left Mudzimurema at home with their two children aged 14 and five years respectively. Around 8pm, Mudzimurema called Matimbira threatening to kill her and their two children because of her alleged illicit affair. He also threatened to kill himself.

“As a result he stabbed his 14-year-old daughter nine times all over the body and proceeded to stab the five-year-old boy twice. They sustained serious injuries. He went on to stab himself twice on the stomach,” said Insp Kakohwa.

Dripping blood from the stomach injuries he surrendered himself at the Sakubva Police Station. The wounded children were wreathing in agony at home with blood oozing out when police attended the scene.

“Police quickly attended the scene and found the children bleeding profusely. They were ferried to Mutare Provincial Hospital where they were admitted in the Intensive Care Unit together with their father who is under police guard,” he said.

By Wednesday their conditions were reportedly stable. Weston’s brother, Mr Blessing Mudzimurema, described him as a violent drunkard and drug addict who goes berserk when heavily intoxicated.

“He is a very big problem in our family. He is too jealousy and violent whenever he gets drunk. I personally think he is possessed.

“This is not the first time to abuse his innocent wife. Sometime back when she was doing temporary teaching in Chimanimani, he assaulted her accusing her of having boyfriends.

She was left with a scar on her face from the assault. He is so much into drugs and it corrupts his thinking. We don’t even know what to do with him,” he said.

Neighbours also blamed him for losing his temper each time he abuses drugs and alcohol.

“This man and his friends take small tablets known as ‘MaDeMbare’. Once one drinks those tablets, he becomes so confused and starts behaving wildly.

“On the day of this incident, he earlier on had a misunderstanding with another person and threatened to butcher him with an axe.

We are now scared of people who abuse these tablets and we are appealing to the police to help us identify and bring to book those peddling the tablets,” said a neighbour.
