Daddy Don starts solo career

SOUTH Africa based musician Daddy Don who was part of the group Get Paper Boy (GPB) has set himself on a new path as a solo artiste and has released a music video for his song called Mumwe Wangu with Malawian Hazel Mak.

Daddy Don real name Sean Makomichie is a dancehall/Afrobeat producer, songwriter and artiste based in Johannesburg but born in Zimbabwe and grew up in Bulawayo. The group GPB had the hits Just Say (Still in Love) and Whine with it that peaked at number one on Star FM’s chart show. The group broke up in 2015 in what they called differences in creativity.

For three years Daddy Don has been trying his hand as a solo artiste and seems to have found the right formula when he roped in United Kingdom based Malawian Hazel Mak, an Afro House artiste on his debut single. The music video was released earlier this month.

Daddy Don said he had to be patient as he had spent a year working on the song waiting for a female vocalist.

On how he met Hazel Mak, Daddy Don said: “I met her through her world management team based in South Africa. I’d been working on the track since 2017 and had left a verse open to shop around for a female collabo. I eventually played it for her manager who immediately sent it to her for consideration, while waiting on a yes or no, she sent through a complete verse and the rest is what people hear on radio now,” said Daddy Don.

He said the song riding on an Afro beat with a touch of dancehall is about reassurance between love birds and was targeting the Malawian market.

“Mumwe Wangu is a song about reassurance in a relationship. It’s someone realising who they’ve been with, the history for the relationship and seeing a future being together with your love,” said Daddy Don.

Daddy Don said the single marks his return in the game and he was working on a seven-song EP.
