MUSIC fans should desist from comparing Sulumani “Sulu” Chimbetu with his late father, Simon as he is his own man and will never be someone else, his publicist Joe “Local” Nyamungoma has said. Speaking in an interview at Ritz Night Club in Masvingo last Friday, Nyamungoma said fans must consider him as an individual artiste whose foundation was laid by Simon.
He said there was no way Sulumani could be like his late father but all he could do was ride on his legacy and maintain the tempo.
“I get surprised when people compare Sulu with his father to the extent of saying his cousin brothers imitate Simon’s voice better than him. As Dendera Kings we’re content with Sulu’s performance, he has shone like a beacon and improves by each day, commanding a huge following in and outside the country,” said Nyamungoma.
Commenting on band members who sometimes leave their bosses to join other bands, Nyamungoma said Sulu has devised an effective mechanism to deal with such members.
“When a vocalist or guitarist wants to leave, we don’t stand in his way. Sulu now does everything by himself and members will only help here and there.
“We realised that some members announce their intentions to leave the group when we’re planning to record songs and that disturbs the rhythm. So when recording, Sulu can do all the guitars alone. On the new album, Gunship, he did most songs alone,” Nyamungoma said.
Music critics are on record comparing Sulu and cousin, Tryson Chimbetu with some rating Tryson as a better musician, citing the way he imitates the late Chimbetu’s voice.
Sulumani and his Orchestra Dendera Kings staged a memorable show when they landed their Gunship at Eland house in Beitbridge on Saturday evening.
