Dagga does the trick, cop tells court

Nhlalwenhle Ncube
A WAYWARD police officer brazenly told a Zvishavane magistrate that he consumes dagga to perform his duties exceptionally.

a?I smoke dagga to become brave because I deal with hard criminals,a? said Prince Chiwawa (28) based at Nkayi Police Station.

His rank was not given in court but the cop was caught with four twists of dagga by an Assistant Inspector Isaach Mandinde from Zvishavane who had arrested him for a different charge.

It all began when Chiwawa refused to pay a $4 bus fare on a Masvingo-Zvishavane bound bus claiming that he had an arrangement with the owner of Joma Transport to pay on arrival.

However, the conductor called the bus owner who denied having had an arrangement with the police officer.

The conductor took him to the police leading to Assistant Inspector Mandindeas body search on the accused and four dagga twists were found.

Chiwawa pleaded guilty and was fined $100 for making off without payment and $100 (or three months in prison) for being found in possession of dagga when he appeared before Zvishavane magistrate Shepherd Mjanja.

Last month Zimbabwe became the second African country after Lesotho to legalise the planting of dagga for medicinal and scientific research purposes.
However, possession and recreational use of the drug remains illegal. .
