A MAN from Munyoro Village under Chief Marange appeared at the Mutare Magistrates Court after he was found in possession of dagga.

Peter Chibururu (30) appeared in court before magistrate Ms Perseverance Makala, facing charges of contravening Section 157(1)(a) of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act (Chapter 09:23).

Prosecutor Mr Chris Manyuku said on April 2, around 6:30pm, police from Mutare Central were at a road block at Mutare Teachers’ College searching for dangerous drugs, weapons and other traffic-related offences, when Chibururu approached the block with passengers on board.

It is alleged that the police officers acted on a tip-off.

“The police signaled the vehicle to stop, and instructed the driver to park aside, and he complied. One Inspector Chaguluka, accompanied by other police officers, approached the vehicle and informed the driver that they wanted to conduct a search. Upon searching they found a wrapped plastic bag containing loose dagga and inside it was small packaging plastic bags under the driver`s seat,” said Mr Manyuku.

The accused person was subsequently arrested after he tried to bribe the police officers.

He was escorted to CID Drugs and Narcotics, where the dagga was weighed 1038.3 grams, with an estimated value of US$103.
