ZIMBABWEAN-BORN Hollywood superstar, Danai Gurira, is among women named in the top 100 most reputable Africans by Reputation Poll International.
Best known for her starring roles as Michonne in the AMC horror drama series, The Walking Dead, and as Okoye in the Marvel, Danai saw herself ranked number 21.
Honorary Counsel for Zimbabwe in Scotland, Lydia Heather Mudhari, is the other Zimbabwean woman on the list, at number 52, while Finance and Economic Development Minister, Professor Mthuli Ncube completes the local trio.
The reputable list features individuals from diverse sectors, including governance, human rights, education, entertainment and business.
The selection criteria includes integrity, impact and visibility.
The award winning 44-year-old Danai, who also boasts of the People’s Choice Award for Favourite Action Movie Star, MORE, is fast building a global reputation.
In 2018, Danai was appointed as the first Black American-Zimbabwean Goodwill Ambassador for UN Women in a bid to support the UN’s work on gender equality and women’s rights.
She has also featured in Marvel’s blockbuster phenomenon “Black Panther” as General Okoye and reprised the role in the film “Avengers: Infinity War”.
Both films are among the top highest grossing movies of all time.
Other select acting credits include the films “All Eyez on Me” (NAACP Image Award nomination), “The Visitor”, “Mother of George” and the NYS&F’s “Measure for Measure” (Equity Callaway Award).
Danai is currently adapting Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s book Americanah into a mini-series.
Other women who made it onto the list include, Martha K Koome, the Chief Justice of Kenya, Marieme Jamme, a Philanthropist and Businesswoman, Joyce Msuya, Assistant Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Deputy Emergency Relief Coordinator at the UN, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, former President of Liberia, Clare Akamanzi, Rwanda Development Board CEO, Carolyn Steyn, 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day founder and Agnes Matilda Kalibab, President of Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa, among others.
