Dance groups to pay tribute to Dhewa

gala at Londoners Sports Bar in Harare today.
Close to 10 groups will perform to Dhewa’s music at the event dubbed “Remembering Dhewa”, while 30 percent of the gate takings from the show will go to the Moyo family.
Groups like Banyana Bafana, Girls of Peace, Apama Style, Millennium Queens, Ghetto Queens, Malaika and Manjenje will remember Dhewa by dancing to his music which they often use during their shows.
“As Dancers’ Association of Zimbabwe we decided to come together as dance groups and pay tribute to the late musician, Tongai Moyo, whose music we normally use during our shows.
“He was one of the country’s finest sungura musicians and his music easily appealed to people, and this made it (the music) a natural favourite of most dance groups.
“Thirty percent of the gate takings will go to Dhewa’s family,” Harpers Mapimhidze, organiser of the show, said.
He added: “As dance groups we worked with Tongai since our industry is the same and as dancers this is one way of paying tribute to the man who contributed immensely to the entertainment scene in Zimbabwe,” he said.
The Minister of Media, Information and Publicity, Cde Webster Shamu, Dhewa’s son, Peter, as well as other distinguished guests are expected to grace the event.
Efforts to seek a comment from Peter were fruitless although Utakataka Express Band manager Shiga Shiga confirmed Mapimhidze approached him with the idea of the memorial gala.
“Yes, the gala is on, but it is not meant for the band but it’s for the Moyo family, so I referred them to Peter,” he said.
Dancers’ Association of Zimbabwe was formed to represent the interests of dance groups in Harare.
