Dancehall jugglers clash @ Jozi party

Blessed Katiyo in JOHANNESBURG

SOME of Johannesburg’s finest dancehall wheel-spinners gave performances of a lifetime on Saturday night at Alicats Pub in Randburg when they clashed at the much-publicised Chief J birthday bash.

The event was graced by notable pioneers in the game who gave a show to remember.

The party theme was “Black and Camouflage” and many revellers came dressed in military regalia.

It was a mini fashion show with the ladies going all out to show off their best outfits.

Chief J, aka, Jay Garan’anga is the resident DJ and manager at the popular pub which draws hundreds of Zimbabwean dancehall lovers under one roof every weekend.

Expensive drinks flowed throughout the night with an array of DJs taking turns on the turntables to entertain the guests.

Security was tight and there were no skirmishes as revellers imbibed and made merry.

“I am so humbled that hundreds turned up for this annual event and it shows that we may be playing in different arenas, but we are all united as Zimbabweans,

“It is unfortunate that the time was limited and not all of the invited guests could play as they wished. We will see how we can accommodate everyone better in future projects,” said Chief J.

Some of the entertainers included Hustle Entertainment, African Tribe, Royal Lion Sound, MC T Boss, Mbare Boys, Godfather, and MC Rico Myers.

The gig continued until the wee hours of Sunday morning. Marcus Garfield and Charlie B ruled the roost in a tight contest that had very little to differentiate when the musical giants clashed. It was a contest that deserved an encore.

Meanwhile, one of the entertainers on the night, Joburg-based Rico Myers, paid tribute to those who support him after he was nominated for the best MC/Presenter of the End of Year 2022 Zimdancehall Award.

He will square up against top MCs like Merciless Zim, Godfatha Templeman, Abisha Palmer, Etherton B, Jah Hanief, and MC Banso for the top accolade. Rico has had a successful year in SA where he featured at almost all events, including Winky D, Freeman, Alick Macheso, Nutty O and EX Q shows that were held in South Africa.

“I am very humbled to be nominated among such great names and hard workers.

“Delayed does not mean denied. Take risks in your life, if you win you can lead and if you fail, you can guide,” said Myers.

Voting for the award nominees is still in progress.
