DANCEHALL music has taken over dominance at the National Gallery of Zimbabwe Mutare branch as evidenced by a huge turnout of upcoming dancehall artistes from around Mutare at the monthly Shaurai poetry and music concerts. The concerts, which were for many years dominated by the hip-hop genre, have seen many hip-hop artistes playing the back bencher role and today (Friday) will be yet another test for the hip-hop heavyweights to show that they are still on top of the game, against all odds.
The event starts at 5pm.
Then, hip-hop gurus such as Kritic Igwe, Flexxo and MK47 were regulars at the concerts.
Now, new flames such as Charlie Nyce, City Boys, Enigma and Culture have shown up and have rekindled the lost glory that was caused by lack of support and sponsorship by stakeholders.
Although nothing extraordinary is expected in tonight’s show, the consistency and the passion the artistes and artists show in each and every edition makes the concert special.
In last month’s edition, female artistes and poet Josephine and Nyarai showed up at the event and added glamour to the usually male-dominated session.
In an interview, the NGZ regional director, Elizabeth Muusha, said she was happy with the artistes’ and fans appreciation, saying the concerts have this year started on a high note.
“We are happy with the response. This year the concerts are becoming bigger and better in terms of artistes participation and fans’ crowd.
“We continue to urge all upcoming artistes and artistes to come and be with us every Friday of mid-month. It is for free and this is a platform for all to showcase their talents,” Muusha said.
