THE rain came down at the Glamis Arena yesterday but the downpour could not spoil the party as the Mega Doek and Slay event lived up to expectations with a record crowd at the Glamis Arena.
Despite the weather, which deteriorated in the afternoon leading to traffic chaos, nature could not dampen the spirits of thousands of women who came for the Mother of All Parties. The Glamis Arena is a bigger venue than Alex Sports Club, the traditional home of these all-women parties.
The last Doe & Slay party at Alex attracted more than 25,000 women. This was bigger by a country mile even though official figures were not available yesterday. The mega show, which was headlined by Jah Prayzah, gave the women their Last Dance this year.“We out of words, this was out of this world,” said the organisers. “We have held Doek & Slay events before but this edition tops every event we have held before.
“Thank you to the ladies who continue to support us every time. Makatikoshera vasikana. See you next year.” The “slay code” was all about embracing the earthy tones of brown, paired with luxurious touches of champagne, off-white, and khaki. Women in fashion topped it up with statement pieces, stunning doeks, and stylish straw hats. Baba Harare, known for his bold and unapologetic style, was marking his return to these all-women parties. He performed topless, as he usually does. Baba Harare’s energy was infectious, and he managed to get the crowd moving with his unique blend of traditional and modern music.
To spice things up, the legendary Mai Chisamba showed up at the event with words of encouragement to the ladies.
“Vakadzi ngatibatanei tiite chimwe without fighting each other but supporting one another.”
One of the women, who spoke to H-Metro, said: “The rains could not stop us from having a good time. It was the therapy that we need as we go through a lot in our homes.
“Much love to the organisers for having our best interests at heart, it was a great show, the music was on point and the energy was amazing.”
