CREME DE LA CREME of Mutare’s basketball players will rub shoulders in a potentially exciting inaugural edition of the ‘Basketball against drugs’ tournament at Dangamvura Beit Hall courts today (Thursday).

Players from different parts of the eastern border city will clash against a select team from Dangamvura in a males’ encounter that promises fireworks after a curtain raising ladies encounter.

National team player, Moses Muyambo, confirmed the development.

“We will have the inaugural edition of the ‘Basketball against drugs’ tournament at Dangamvura Beit Hall courts on Thursday (today). This is a tournament that we hope will help raise awareness on the dangers of drug abuse among youths.

“We really want to urge the people of Mutare and beyond to come and watch some potentially enthralling encounters. This is also a way of promoting sports in the high-density suburbs.

“The exciting thing about this tournament is that we have talented players in Dangamvura and one expects a highly entertaining match when their team clashes against equally talented select team comprising players from different parts of Mutare.

“We will have Mutare mayor, Councillor Tatenda Nhamarare as the guest of honour. The event starts at 1pm and we are expecting everything to be done by 6pm. We will also have entertainment activities during the course of the tournament,” he said.

Muyambo said organisers had sent personal invitations to sporting role models in Mutare that include cricket sensation, Tendai Chatara whom they intent to honour during the tournament.

“We have a number of sporting role models in Mutare that we have invited for the tournament. They are not necessarily going to be playing, but as our role models we want to honour them for their efforts in sport.

“We expect to give upcoming youths inspiration by giving them a chance to see and go one on one with successful sportspersons in the city,” he said.
