ZIMBABWE’S Danielle Bekker raised the flag high when she finished second at the US Kids European Golf Championships 2014 at Gullane Golf Club in East Lothian, Scotland, yesterday. The junior golfer had started on a high note leading the girls’ 11-years age group going into the final round which she faltered and shot a 90. Bekker of Chapman was part of more than 500 players, aged between five and 18, from 30 countries who competed in the annual event.
The youngster had a solid first round shooting 35 in the front nine and 44 on the back nine for 79 which put her tied into the lead.
She had been seeded on that first day.
The second day she played consistently showing great focus and was impressive in her short game and managed to end up with a two-shot lead over eventual winner Magdalena Cervinkova of Czekoslovakia.
Bekker was eight shots ahead of last year’s winner Ffion Tynan of United States who was third. Bekker suffered in the conditions, which were challenging with rain, wind and freezing cold weather, on the third day, especially on the back nine.
The weather suited the European girls more than it did our Zimbabwean star and it was extremely challenging for her to hold onto the lead.
