THE birth of a masterpiece often requires countless hours in the studio, fuelled by the tireless dedication of a skilled producer. DanMag Studios in Bulawayo, founded by Daniel Magara (DanMag) and Hardlife Magara (HadMag), is the birthplace of musical legends, forged through their unwavering commitment to the craft.The studio, established in November 2017, has seen the producers working with various artists around Zimbabwe, including Madlela Sikhobokhobo, Chase Skuza, Ndolwane Super Sounds, Mark Ngwazi, and Albert Nyathi.
The Bulawayo studio is located in Pumula South. DanMag shared that the aim is to support local artists.
“Our studio’s mission is to provide high-quality music production services and to support local artists. We have worked with the likes of Franco Slono, Albert Nyathi, Trymore Bande, Mark Ngwazi, Joseph Garakara, Chase Skuza, Madlela Sikhobokhobo, Ndolwane Super Sounds, Love More Muketiwa, Kwejani Band, Jambezi Sounds, King Truth, Jigoo Trust Chikabwe, and Noah Mkhuli.“We even now have clients from outside Zimbabwe and overseas that we record online,” he shared.
DanMag went on to highlight the challenges they face as music producers, including a lack of proper financing.
“As producers, we’ve encountered several challenges while working with artistes. One major hurdle is the need for high-end equipment to record live bands, which can be expensive. This limits our ability to deliver top-notch quality recordings. Additionally, many talented artistes struggle with financial stability, making it challenging to collaborate and bring their visions to life.
“Another significant challenge is finding affordable, suitable spaces for live band recordings, especially those with acoustic drums. External noise and interruptions can compromise the quality of our work. However, despite all of the challenges, we are committed to overcoming these obstacles and continuing to support local talent in Zimbabwe,” said DanMag.
He went on to share that working with artists from various backgrounds requires commitment and passion.
“As a producer, working with artists from diverse backgrounds and genres can be a thrilling experience. I have managed to adjust by training myself to fully understand the artiste’s vision, goals, and creative process. This involves asking questions, clarifying expectations, and being receptive to their ideas. I’m aware of the cultural context and nuances that shape the artiste’s work. This helps me to be respectful and empathetic, fostering a positive collaboration.
“I’ve also worked with various genres, from Gospel, Sungura, Rhumba, Tshovatshova, Tshibilika, Maskandi, Afro-pop, Zimdancehall, Trade, Acapella, and Electronic to Hip-Hop, Pop, and Classical. This versatility allows me to adapt and find common ground with artistes from different musical backgrounds,” he said.
DanMag also said he is open to new ideas and approaches, even if they challenge his creative habits. This flexibility enables him to find innovative solutions that blend different styles.
“Communication also helps me to ensure that all parties are on the same page regarding project goals, timelines, and expectations. Naturally, I celebrate the unique perspectives and strengths each artist brings. By embracing these differences, we create something truly innovative and special.
“Trust is essential in any collaboration; therefore, I work to establish a rapport with the artiste, built on mutual respect, reliability, and open communication. By following these and other principles, I’m able to balance working with artistes from diverse backgrounds and genres, resulting in exciting and enriching collaborations that push creative boundaries,” he shared.
He further highlighted that he plans to empower even school children, as he finds satisfaction in interpreting artistes’ dreams and bringing their visions to life.
