A 37-year-old man landed in the dock facing allegations of vehicle theft.

Tawanda Chaitezvi was denied bail when he appeared before Harare magistrate Evelyn Mashavakure last Friday.

He will be in court today for his bail application.

The State said on August 12, at around 9pm, the complainant, Denzel Wankies, was driving along 25th Street, Joburg Lines in Mbare, when he pulled over to buy some cigarettes and tissues from a nearby tuck-shop.

He left the vehicle idling with the keys on the ignition.

Chaitezvi jumped into the car and attempted to drive off.

However, Wankies rushed back and grabbed the steering and switched off the engine. It is alleged that Chaitezvi then jumped out of the car, from the front passenger side, and fled from the scene.

Wankies screamed for help and Chaitezvi was apprehended by members of the public and handed over to the police.

Chaitezvi denied the allegations.

He will appear in court today for bail application.

Tinotenda Masimba represented the State.
