A daring thief yesterday broke into three staff houses at Tsholotsho District Hospital and got away with a laptop, cellphones and cash while the owners were asleep. The break-in occurred at about 3AM.
Sources at the hospital said the thief stole a pair of trousers from a house belonging to a tutor at the school of nursing and left it at a senior matron’s house.
“A nurse called Phumulani Moyo lost a cellphone, Michael Mhere, a tutor at the school of nursing also lost a cellphone, his office keys and a wallet containing $200 and an ATM card.
“A pair of trousers that he was wearing the night before was reportedly dropped by the thief at Sister in Charge of the Male Ward, Mercy Marima’s house. The thief went on to steal a laptop and three cellphones from Sister Marima’s house,” said one of the sources.
“One of the victims woke up to find the thief ransacking Sister Marima’s house. The victim shouted for help and the thief jumped out through a window and disappeared into the night. Others woke up at that time and discovered that more people had been robbed. Sister Marima was not in her house at the time of the break-in because she was on night duty,” said the source.
A comment could not be obtained from hospital authorities. However, the officer commanding Lupane Police District, Chief Superintendent Johannes Govo, confirmed the break-in.
“Police are investigating a case of unlawful entry at Tsholotsho District Hospital where the suspect(s) stole an HP laptop, five cellphones and a wallet that had $200 and a bank card,” said Chief Supt Govo.
He said it was too early to release a comprehensive statement as police were still carrying out investigations. Chief Supt Govo said police were worried by a sudden increase in cases of unlawful entry, adding that 24 hour police patrols would soon be introduced in the district.
“A heavy police presence will deter criminal activities. We have done it in Lupane and recorded a reduced crime rate over the festive season,” he said.
