principles of the constitution ahead of another workshop to be held tomorrow.
They want to finalise the information to be included in the draft of the supreme law.
The principles and the constitutional framework were adopted at a workshop held in Masvingo last week.
Copac co-chairperson Cde Paul Mangwana of Zanu-PF said the date to start drafting will be finalised at tomorrow’s workshop.
“We met today and were going through the outcome of the workshop held in Masvingo. We were looking at the document on the principles of the constitution and now we are going to have another
workshop to look at what goes into the draft constitution.
“We cannot call in the drafters before we decide what goes into the draft,” he said.
Co-chairperson Mr Edward Mkhosi of MDC said drafting will only start when all the preparatory work has been completed.
“We were revising the principles that we have already developed and the framework that we will use to fit in those issues to go into the constitution.
“We will have another workshop on Thursday so that we finalise everything and the dates for the remaining processes so that when the drafting starts there will no stoppages and disturbances,” Mr Mkhosi said.
Mr Douglas Mwonzora of the MDC-T said:
“We met and agreed that we hold a special meeting on Thursday to determine issues that are going to be in the constitution.
“The dates for drafting would then be advised after the meeting.”
The constitution making process is behind schedule by over a year due to wrangling among the parties and unavailability of resources.
The completion of the draft constitution will lead to the holding of a referendum followed by general elections.
University of Zimbabwe lecturer Mr Brian Crozier, former High Court judge, Justice Moses Chinhengo and Harare lawyer Ms Prisca Madzonga will lead the drafting of the constitution.
