A 36-YEAR-OLD woman from Nkulumane suburb in Bulawayo has been sentenced to 30 months in prison for brutally bashing her father with a frying pan and stones, following a domestic dispute.

According to the State’s case, as presented by Ms Audrey Kufandikani, Zodwa Nkomo struck her father, Mr Elmon Nkomo (72) with a frying pan and proceeded to hit him with stones.

Western Commonage magistrate Mr Vakai Douglas Chikwekwe, presided over the matter.

Zodwa will serve an effective 24 months of the sentence after six months were suspended on condition that she does not commit a similar offence within five years.

In passing the sentence, Mr Chikwekwe said Nkomo’s conduct was deplorable and uncalled for.

“Her conduct was immoral as she assaulted her father, which is a taboo in our own culture to beat a parent,” he said.

“The attack was unprovoked in any way and the courts should not condone such deeds. The offender used a lethal weapon, which is a stone and a pan.

“She aimed the pan on the head, which is a sensitive part of the body. The victim is in his advanced age and is of fragile health.

For personal and general deterrence, a prison term will meet the justice of this case,” ruled Mr Chikwekwe.

According to Ms Kufandikani, on 1 September 2024 at around 2.30 PM, Mr Nkomo asked Zodwa to help her mother do house chores. She said Zodwa was angered by the suggestion and armed herself with a pan, before striking Mr Nkomo on the upper left eye.

Ms Kufandikani told the court that Zodwa went on to assault Mr Nkomo with stones in the ribs. As a result of the attack, Mr Nkomo sustained injuries on the face and in his ribcage.

“The victim is an elderly man who is fragile and cannot endure such atrocities. As a daughter, the offender was in a position of trust and care towards her father,” Ms Kufandikani said.
