DAVIS Granite will sponsor an HIV Sports Day at Sizane High School to raise funds for disadvantaged pupils on Saturday.
Davis Granite were allowed by the Matabeleland Aids Council to stage the event at a school near their operations and they opted for Sizane High School.
This has been an annual event since 2008 and its the fourth time that it is being held at Sizane High School.
Convenor, Veronica Stanley said that funds raised from the day’s programme would be given to Aids orphans. “The funds will be used to buy orphans school uniforms and pay school fees,” said Stanley.
Pupils will on the day compete in different sporting disciplines such as soccer, netball, darts and tug-of-war.
Stanley said when the sports day started it was only Davis Granite and Sizane but now it has attracted other partners such as Datlabs, Delta, Chipangali and some schools as well.
Delta Beverages are the defending champions in social soccer.
Stanley said they chose sport which was popular especially with the youths.
“It is easier to reach out to people through sport, ” she said.
Stanely said for Davis Granite, this was part of the company’s community responsibility programme.
Matabeleland Aids Council will take advantage of the gathering to offer voluntary counselling and testing. Stanley encouraged school pupils and the community to come in numbers to support the noble cause.
Davis Granite scooped the prestigious Zimbabwe Chamber of Commerce Social Responsibility Awareness Award for its Aids Awareness programme in 2010.
