KEEN to support the less privileged children, a Bulawayo firm Davis Granite in conjunction with Sizane High School held a fundraising sports fun day yesterday. The one-day event was held at Sizane High and it was the sixth edition of the competition. Soccer, netball, tug-of-war, darts, chess and volleyball are the sporting codes which were played on the day with more than 200 athletes participating in what was hailed as the biggest edition since its inception in 2010.
Christian Brothers College, Inhlathi, Mandwandwe, Njube, Lobengula and also Sizane were the schools that took part in the competition while the organisations that participated were Davis Granite, Delta Beverage, Datlabs, National Foods as well as ZRP.
To support the cause, the corporate paid $10 as affiliation fees while schools forked out $5 to participate.
In the soccer contest which had 14 teams from schools and companies, Pelandaba FC were crowned as the champions after defeating Delta Beverages 4-2 in penalty shoot-outs.
Davis Granite’s sports co-ordinator, Veronica Stanley pointed out that the event was organised in line with the organisation’s social responsibility policy.
“Holding such a rewarding event is also part of our organisational policy since it is a way of giving back to the community. Our aim is to make this event a national event were there will be more teams participating from different parts of the nation,” said Stanley.
Sizane High headmistress Deborah Manyoba praised the organisations that participated pointing out that it would benefit the less privileged. The other objective of the one-day event was to educate the youths about HIV and Aids through sport.
