African national teams’ rugby coaches are expected to attend the refresher course that starts today and ends on Wednesday.
Dawson, a holder of an IRB Level Two coaching certificate, was delighted with the course, which he believes will help him develop as a gaffer.
He said he put on hold the meeting with the Sables’ technical team that was meant to plan for the year.
“I had to prepare for this IRB coaching course and due to limited time I will be meeting the other guys to come up with a plan for the year. The course in Cape Town is for African coaches and I am happy to be part of the people attending it.
“The game is changing and we have to adapt to those changes. There are top guys from the IRB who will be taking us through the course where issues of technique and other stuff will be addressed. I look forward to using what I will learn to further our campaigns,” Dawson said.
The Bulawayo-based gaffer was last month given a four-year contract and is expected to lead the Sables to the IRB 2015 World Cup that is set for England.
Last year the former Zimbabwe international guided the Sables to an unbeaten run of five games in the Victoria Rugby Cup in the process winning the trophy.
Zimbabwe beat Kenya 42-24 in Harare before completing a double with a 26-21 win in Nairobi. The Sables had beaten Uganda 49-29 in Bulawayo and 25-15 in Kampala where Zimbabwe also cruised past Madagascar.
Under Dawson, Zimbabwe moved from 48 to 35 on world rankings.
He also introduced young blood in the Sables team in the form of Busters’ 22-year-old winger Lloyd Machanjaira and Tatenda Karuru who was part of the national Under-20 team that toured Georgia in May.
Dawson and his technical team have to identify players who they will use for the July Confederation of African Rugby competition that will also be used as a build-up to the IRB World Cup qualifiers.
The former Zimbabwe international will get to see most of the players in action in the National Rugby League that starts next month.
Dawson has formed a club, the Warriors, and they will be part of Bulawayo’s representatives in the National Rugby League.
Busters, Old Miltonians and Western Panthers are the three Bulawayo clubs that have been active in the league.
