as it seeks to curb imposition of candidates and empower the electorate to choose leaders they want, Umguza MP Cde Obert Mpofu said yesterday.
Addressing close to 2 000 people who included Zanu-PF members in Nyamandlovu, Cde Mpofu, who is also a Politburo member said the dissolution of DCCs was not giving him a headache as he was assured of victory in the next election.
“No one can build a party through backbiting and hooliganism. The electorate is not foolish and every leader is there because of people. As leaders we should respect people who put us in the positions we occupy. Elections are coming soon and I always tell President Mugabe that Umguza has no problem. Come elections we will win resoundingly,” said Cde Mpofu.
“To us whether DCCs have been dissolved or not akulamehluko (there is no difference). Some people think they are going to win elections through DCCs as if they were elected by DCCs. Some of them are very angry over the issue. In Umguza that is not a problem.”
Zanu-PF recently dissolved DCCs in all provinces saying the structure was being abused by some leaders and had become divisive.
Cde Mpofu urged people in his constituency to work together in fostering development and desist from fanning violence and hatred.
He said there was a need for party leaders in Matabeleland North province to work in unison to ensure the party wins all seats in the coming harmonised general poll.
“Before we hold elections there will be primaries and especially in Matabeleland North we do not want disorganised people to contest. Asifuni abantu abalesiyezi. We want leaders who are chosen by people. The party was defeated in the last election because of the imposition of candidates,” said Cde Mpofu.
“This time we want people from Matabeleland North to choose their own leaders. As it is we people are hungry and suffering but there are leaders who are doing nothing.
“A lot of confusion and chaos is caused by power hungry leaders who do not respect people.”
Cde Mpofu urged parents to take their children to school and pledged to pay school fees for those who are underprivileged.
He assured people in the area that no one will die of hunger as the Government was ready to provide food under the Grain Loan Scheme.
He donated 30 tonnes of maize. The consignment was donated to Wards 14, 15 and 19.
Each household received a 50kg bag of maize.
He pledged to spread support to other districts to ensure that Zanu-PF retains popular support.
“Some people always ask where I get the money to do all these things. I work hard. I have businesses and I have no time to waste. I spend time with my wife discussing how we can assist people and share what we have with them.
“This time we want Zanu-PF to improve its election performance in Matabeleland North. We will go to Bubi, Hwange, Tsholotsho, Nkayi and Binga and assist our members,” said Cde Mpofu.
Later on he held a question and answer session during which party supporters and ordinary members asked questions on different issues that affect them.
Disabled people challenged Cde Mpofu to consider their plight and facilitate development programmes for them.
The youth appealed for assistance in the development of sporting facilities and provision of sporting equipment.
Others complained that the distribution of grain at the Grain Marketing Board was not done properly and alleged that the process was cumbersome.
Some commended Cde Mpofu for facilitating development especially in the education sector, provision of food and drilling of boreholes.
A villager from Muntu Farm said there was a need to build more secondary schools and clinics in the area.
Zanu-PF Matabeleland North provincial political commissar Cde Jonathan Nkanyezi, former acting chairman Cde Zwelitsha Masuku and other senior provincial party leaders also attended the meeting.
