De Jonge to play at Sony Open

at 12:30 in USA to play along with Darron Styles and Tag Ridings.
The Zimbabwe top, golfer, will be hoping for a good start to the New Year when he opens his 2013 campaign on the US PGA Tour.

De Jonge, who sis based in the United States was the highest earning Zimbabwean sportsperson in 2012 pocketing around US$2 million in prizes.

The event in Honolulu is the first official competition on the PGA Tour after last week’s unofficial Hyundai Tournament of Champions in Kapalua, Hawaii.

The $5,5 million purse has a strong 148-man field and will see the winner taking home $990 000 in prize money.

De Jonge will have high hopes after he finished tied for 10th place at last year’s tournament in Hawaii and just four shots short of the eventual champion, American Jason Wagner.

De Jonge, who is 83rd on the official world golf rankings, will be also hoping to improve on his previous performance in the Sony Open.

Should he start this season the way he ended the previous campaign, it will only be a matter of time before De Jonge finally ends his wait for a big win on tour.

Last year De Jonge had top finishes which, included an impressive tally of five top 10 finishes and holed a tour-best 425 birdies, while making the cut in 27 of 31 starts.

A second place finish towards the end of the season in the Justin Timberlake Shriner’s Hospital for Children Classic saw him record his best career score of 62.

Meanwhile several golf clubs across the country have suspended choking handicaps for players in events they are taking part because of the course conditions.

The rains that were received throughout most parts of the country have left a number of courses water logged.

At Falcon in Hatfield the Saturday matchplay event was forced into a pre-mature end because of the weather.

Most clubs also have poor drainage systems, which has worsened their plight.
The sport, which is not seasonal, is always affected this time of the year but the players always give it their best to play the game.

Every golf member is expected to play a single round at home course per week so it will be unfair if handicapping continues.

February is usually the most affected month but last week it was a different issue with most clubs in Harare failing to finish the weekend tournaments.

Clubs like Warren Hills, Falcon, Country Club, Sherwood, Mount Pleasant in Harare are the most affected.
