AndrewTHE contingent of Zimbabwean players plying their trade in South Africa are tomorrow likely to get an indication on when competitive action could resume after a National Soccer League (NSL) Board of Governors meeting to decide the fate of the 2019-20 season was postponed following the passing of chairman Irvin Khoza’s wife, Matina, last Thursday.
The NSL were due to meet last Friday to discuss their options in terms of completing the domestic campaign, or whether to call it null and void and concentrate on starting the 2020/21 season.
But the tragic passing of PSL chairman Khoza’s wife has seen the gathering shifted to tomorrow. Khoza is also the chairman of Soweto giants Orlando Pirates.
“Mme Matina (69), who was affectionately referred to by everybody, including her 10 grandchildren, as Mama, has been in and out of hospital in the last few years battling ill health,” a statement from Orlando Pirates said.
“The Khoza Family pleads with the public to help us observe restrictions imposed on the nation by the Covid-19 pandemic. There will, as a result, be no visitations and prayer services held at home.”
Clubs in the Absa Premiership and GladAfrica Championship will decide whether to keep on playing in 2019-20 or call the season to a halt, in which case they must plot a way forward in terms of promotion and relegation.
For Willard Katsande and Khama Billiat, they will be praying for an ending that will see their Kaizer Chiefs crowned champions while the trio of George Chigova, Walter Musona and Charlton Mashuimba are waiting to help Polokwane City avoid relegation.
Chiefs with 44 points, have a four-point advantage over the pair of defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns who have Peter Ndlovu as team manager and Kaiatano Tembo’s third-placed SuperSport United.
SuperSport, hoping for slip ups by Chiefs and Sundowns for them to snatch the championships, are also home to the Zimbabwean quartet of Washington Arubi, Onismor Bhasera, Evans Rusike and Kuda Mahachi. — SuperSport/Sports Reporter.
