handover ceremony in Harare yesterday, Defence Minister Emmerson Mnangagwa said the donation was part of his ministry’s social responsibility programme.
“My message to the Ministry of Home Affairs, particularly the Department of Immigration is that computers are just computers and can remain as such without any benefit if you do not come up with suitable programmes and engage suitably qualified personnel for their efficient use,” he said.
Minister Mnangagwa said the computers had come at a time when Government had introduced e-government.
Home Affairs co-Minister Kembo Mohadi said the donation would go a long way in helping the department carry its mandate.
“The Department of Immigration is a security department because our ports of entry and exit play a pivotal role in safeguarding our national interests from undesirable elements who may want to come into the country with ulterior motives,” Minister Mohadi said.
He said the Department of Immigration had been identified as part of the flagship departments in the e-governance.
Minister Mohadi said the Department of Immigration was looking into the issue of online visa applications and machine generated receipts as part of a wider computerisation exercise.
He said the computers would also help the department to do away with massive paperwork and be able to store valuable information using minimum space.
Minister Mohadi added that the department was in the process of computerising all ports of entry and exits by end of year.
