RELEGATION fighters Chegutu Pirates breathed some life into their campaign to remain in the World Navi Northern Region Division One soccer league over the weekend when they beat visiting Lake Harvest 1-0 to move two places up the ladder.
Tinashe Mapanje scored the only goal as the Chegutu side continues their remarkable push for safety.
Mapanje scored from a cross by returning forward Simbarashe Domingo, whose return to the team has made a big difference, after 27 minutes.
The Pirates held on for a priceless victory.
They were second-from-the-bottom-of-the-table going into the weekend and they have now moved into 15th place.
Pirates coach, Gipter Raiva, said he expects more positive results in the coming games.
“The game was okay. Lake Harvest were in control in the first 10 minutes but the moment we took control of the ball, after those 10 minutes, we started to dominate from there.
“We could have scored seven or so goals but we missed chances. We scored in the first half and we said we should continue to attack in the second half because the best way to defend is to attack,” said Raiva.
Raiva noted that they still need to work on their strike-force so that they become more precise in front of the goals.
“We need to be more tactically disciplined, when we get the ball, because the strikers, especially (on Saturday) they were making quick decisions,” Raiva said.
However, for Chegutu Pirates their joy may not last long as Blue Swallows and Twalumba sitting on position 16 and 17 have a game in hand each.
And if they win their outstanding games they can easily overtake Chegutu.
