A Beatrice man who stole an assortment of goods worth more than US$800 from his employer and concealed them in a nearby bush will spend 33 months in prison. Fidelis Chikosha of Plot number 3 Fredential Farm in Beatrice also defied the court when he failed to perform 210 hours of community service after he was convicted of a similar offence earlier.
Chikosha (19) who was employed by Wunganai Chakwenya (61), as a general hand, stole items that included clothes and blankets, which he buried in a pit he dug in the bush.
The incident took place on October 19 at around 3pm when Chikosha took advantage of the absence of Chakwenya who had gone out on business.
The court heard that Chikosha broke the main door to gain entry into the house.
When Chakwenya returned the following day he found his door broken.
He inquired from Chikosha and another worker who prophesied ignorance.
The matter was reported to the police and investigations were carried out leading to Chikosha’s arrest.
Goods valued at US$779 were recovered from the pit.
Chikosha appeared before Chitungwiza magistrate Mr Kudakwashe Jarabini who convicted and him, slapping him with 25 months imprisonment.
One month was suspended on condition he restitutes the US$27 that was outstanding from the goods recovered.
In addition, three months that had been set aside in an earlier case were brought into effect.
Mr Jarabini also ordered Chikosha to serve the alternative six months he defaulted for the community service.
