DELTA Beverages has embarked on a waste management project in Masvingo aimed at reducing pollution as part of the company’s sustainable development strategy.
The giant beverages maker has to date installed in excess of 250 waste collection cages throughout the country with 22 having been established in Masvingo.
The cages have been adapted by other waste recycling partners for collection and onward transmission to recycling centres.
Speaking during a clean-up campaign exercise in Masvingo’s Mucheke suburb last Thursday, Delta Beverage’s Safety and Health Environment (SHE) executive Mr Joel Muzenda said his company was committed to managing waste from production process to post-consumer.
He hailed Masvingo City Council for providing land for the installation of waste recycling centres.
Mr Muzenda also said the programme gives Small to Medium Enterprises (SMEs) business opportunities as collected waste can be turned into fire pots and other materials for resale.
He said Delta’s sustainable development strategy is based on the recognition that the interest of the company and those of the wider community are intertwined.
Mr Muzenda said the culture of turning “trash” to “cash” should grow within communities and the recycling opportunities need to be exploited fully. He said people who collect glass and cans would get instant cash in return while underscoring the need for waste separation at household level.
