DELTA Beverages marketing director Imirayi Muzorewa believes that Zimbabwe is bubbling with football talent and sees a bright future for the game in the country.
This, he notes, has increased the level of competition in the local league, creating room for more emerging quality stars.
In a speech at the 2024 Soccer Stars ceremony in the capital on Friday, Muzorewa said the country is filled with immense talent, hence the improved class of domestic football.
“We gather to celebrate the extraordinary dedication and talent we find in our beautiful game,” he said.
“This year has been remarkable in terms of the football game, fierce competition, beautiful moments, as well as sad ones, as we did lose a number of football luminaries in the year.
“Each of the players this year showed immense skill and determination, sportsmanship, and has certainly made the season a very memorable one.”
At the ceremony, Simba Bhora’s Walter Musona was crowned the Soccer Star of the Year, while Lynoth Chikuhwa of Highlanders and Yadah’s Khama Billiat were the first and second runners-up in that order.
Eight other players drawn from across clubs were recognised as Soccer Star finalists, whereas budding star Allan Chapinduka from Telone emerged as the Rookie of the Year.
For years, Delta Beverages has emerged as a front-runner in the domestic league and prestigious cup competition, reinforcing their position as the main sponsors.
This year, they renewed their commitment to PSL, unveiling a new three-year sponsorship deal worth US$3,390 million.
Through their Castle Lager brand, they pledged US$ 2,265,000 for the championship race for three years.
The other US$1,125.00 goes towards the Chibuku Super Cup for all the years.
Resultantly, this has paved the way for consistency in local football and a conducive environment to produce stars.
“Tonight we honour the best of the best, and I must say that ‘The Soccer Star of the Year’ is not just about individual brilliance.
“Instead, it is testament to the hard work and perseverance that each nominee embodies,” he said. “The 11 players that we are honouring here have inspired us and everyone else who follows the game to want to do more.
“The talent that we have seen this season gave a highlight on what to anticipate next season.
“So to the coaches, managers, and other staff, your efforts have not gone unnoticed, and we urge you to continue with the hard work.”
