NOT many expected Dynamos to have a better start — eight points in the first four games of the season.
But some will still look back at their 1-1 draw with Agama at Wadzanai yesterday and realise the record could have been better. Jairos Kasondo once again proved to be the difference for Dynamos, converting an 83rd-minute penalty to salvage a point for his side.
Kasondo’s strike cancelled out an early goal from Cain Mashonganyika. It was a goal that promised much for the newcomers, as they seemed to be heading for a surprise win.
The draw, however, ensures that DeMbare go into the international break well positioned to have a better season than last year. And for Kasondo, this becomes his third goal of the season. Scottland’s Khama Billiat currently leads the scoring charts with four goals, having managed another brace yesterday against FC Hunters.
“We have had a decent start this season compared to last. It’s a bit refreshing because last season we only started picking up points later on, when we were in the thick of a relegation battle. Starting well helps us play without pressure as a team,” Kasondo said.
“When I first arrived at Dynamos, I told myself this was the platform to show what I can do. But it was difficult to establish myself until the second half of the season.
“When I finally got my chance, I utilised it. That’s when I started to believe that I am just like any other player. That belief motivates me and makes the game feel easy.”
Dynamos have had to rebuild under coach Genesis Mangombe after last year’s relegation fight. The likes of Pio Tellmore and Shadreck Nyahwa, who were in the thick of things yesterday, are some of the remaining players from the class of 2025. And new signings such as Collin Mujuru and Stanely Billiat has given the Glamour Boys renewed hope. With DeMbare playing catch-up yesterday, it was always going to be difficult to bring out their true colour.
For Kasondo, what matters is to fight till the end and try to score.
“By the time we reach mid-season, I hope to be in contention for the Golden Boot among the top scorers. To do that, I need to keep working hard. But as a team, we are looking to win something to put in our trophy cabinet.
“Me being here at Dynamos and performing well is not a small thing, it’s a win for my Banket community and all other areas like ours. I have a whole lot of people, especially youngsters, who are inspired by me. It shows that you can do it on the biggest stage, no matter where you come from. It brings belief and takes away the fear.”
