DOMESTIC football this week lost another servant following the death of former Premier Soccer League board member and ex-Dynamos Treasurer Harrison Mbewe.
Mbewe, 81, died in Harare on Monday after a lengthy battle with ill-health and was buried at Glen Forest yesterday.
Dynamos chief executive officer Jonathan Mashingaidze yesterday said it was saddening the club continued to lose its elders following the death of former club secretary Austin Zvoma last week.
Mbewe, a former Mhangura and Dynamos player, was part of the DeMbare executive from 2008 and stepped out of the limelight following his ouster in 2011.
“Dynamos Football Club joins the Mbewe family, Dynamos Football Club family and the entire football family in mourning the passing on of Mr Harrison Mbewe.
“News of the late Mbewe’ s passing on comes barely a week after the club lost the former secretary general the late Austin Zvoma.
“The late Mbewe was a selfless and professional administrator who always put the interests of the club first before all else. He will be dearly missed by the entire football family. May his dear soul rest in peace,” said Mashingaidze.
Mbewe played for Dynamos back in the 1960-70s alongside club icons like George Shaya and Morrison Sifelani. A former teacher, he also served in the civil service as an under-secretary before returning to football as an administrator.
Family spokesperson Jonathan Mbewe said they lost a pillar.
“He has been ill for some time and he had an operation to remove a clot in the head two weeks ago. Unfortunately, he could not make it.
“But as a family, today we celebrate his life. It was a life well-lived.
He was a fountain of knowledge, always ready to help. May his dear soul rest in peace,” said Jonathan Mbewe.
Mbewe is survived by his wife, five children and 10 grandchildren.
